- I don't know if this is the optimal place for this discussion, but I'll
- indulge you.
-
- If you're just a casual user, almost any mouse will do. But if you're hard on
- your computer, of if you do any precision work like CAD or graphics editing
- where pixel-level accuracy counts, do yourself a favor and spend the few extra
- bucks for a better mouse.
-
- The cheap mice get dirty very fast, and quickly get "jagged" - the pointer
- doesn't move exactly where you want it to, jumping off a bit. I assume it's
- because of cheap construction of the sensor and the use of tiny plastic
- rollers. Close enough for government work, but not AutoCAD or Photoshop.
-
- Best way to determine mouse quality, aside from using it... pick it up. A
- nice, solid Microsoft Mouse or Logitech has some weight to it. The cheaper
- mice are far lighter and flimsier.
-
- At work I use an enhanced dpi (800?) 3-button model from Mouse Systems.
- It works well for CAD. At home I use a standard 2-button Microsoft Mouse, and
- it's my favorite. (Actually, my favorite was the old Microsoft Mouse that
- didn't make an attempt at being ergonomic - but after a while, these things do
- fall apart, and they've stopped making them.)
-
- Those Dexxa mice from Logitech that you see everywhere selling for $15 or so
- should be avoided if you do any careful work. I went through half a dozen of
- them. I think Dexxa is Greek for "Crappy version of Logitech."
